Module 7: Problem Solving with Length, Money, and Data
This module has 26 lessons. There is some prep for this module. You should print the animal picture cards in color in 7.1, mount, and laminate them. 7.1 also has 4 charts to prep. Be sure to save them for lessons 7.2 and 7.3. Decomposition Trees (7.6) are introduced. I would recommend running them double sided. I noted a few key items to be aware of below. It's also in the materials list for this module. If you don't have large magnetic money (coins), you might think about buying a set. A set is relatively cheap on amazon. DON'T buy the double-sided magnetic money. The coins don't stick to the board because they are too heavy. I use the Learning Resources large magnetic coins and they are great!
**The Problem Sets in google docs have been updated for this module as of 12/11/14.
7.2 - Make "Favorite Class of Animal" table on a chart. Use Charts 3 and 4 from 7.1. If possible, use a poster machine for Template 1 and 2 graphs.
7.3 - Make a tally chart for the Application Problem. For Template 3, make a poster on the poster machine. Use Charts 3 and 4 from 7.1 and the Completed Template 1 from 7.2.
7.4 - You will need the graph from the Application Problem earlier in the lesson. Chart #1 "Our Birthdays" (horizontal) graph labeled with the seasons of the year and the months that comprise each season (seasons labeled on the side). Chart #2: "Favorite Books" graph labeled with 3 titles.
7.12 - Make a chart or brainstorm a list of problem solving steps.
7.15 - Each student needs 12x2 in strips of tagboard for making rulers. Use the bag of 26 tiles from 7.14 - one per student.
7.16 - Set up 5 centers: make a sign for each center, print directions for each center
7.17 - Prep two charts: Mental Benchmarks on 7.D.15 and 7.D.16
7.18 - Prep chart for recording measurements
7.19 - Butcher paper 30 in. x 18 in., 7 ft. long piece of string
7.23 - Save lesson data for 7.24
Pacing Tips:
7.1-7.5 - Picture graphs, Bar graphs. Good to cover. Make sure you prep your charts ahead of time!
7.6-7.11- Coins and money!
7.12-7.13 - Word problems with Money
7.14-7.22 - Measurement with inches and feet---- could skip these lessons!
7.23 Even though it is part of the measurement section and you may be skipping it, pg. 7.F.5 (Part 2) has students provide data about the measurement of their handspans. It says you need this data for Lesson 24. ***
7.24-7.26 - Line plots (more graphing)
